AHCH Celebrates Hospice & Palliative Nursing Certification Graduates
Lewiston, Maine 1.13.14 - Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice is committed to providing the opportunities and resources necessary for staff to excel in their chosen fields and in turn gain the certifications, knowledge and skills needed to enhance the quality of care for our patients.
The national certification in Hospice & Palliative nursing is the only specialty that offers exams for all levels of nursing - nursing assistants, LPNs, RNs, NPs and Administrators. "Years back, when I was the educator it was one of our goals that all staff would achieve this status, and with this group of new graduates we are one step closer to achieving this goal," shared Karen Flynn, Hospice Director for AHCH.
The National Board for Certification of Hospice & Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN), was established in 1992 and received accreditation in 2002 from the American Board of Nursing Specialties. The organization offers specialty certification for all levels of the hospice and palliative nursing care teams and administrators. Each certification is valid for 4 years at which time the individual can renew the credential via accumulated education credits for retesting. Currently the NBCHPN certifies over 17,000 health professionals and is recognized by the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and National Hospice & Palliative Care organization as a professional benchmark for quality and expertise in the speciality.
NBCHPN's mission statement is clear: they are a national organization that advances quality in the provision of care to patients and families facing life limiting illnesses through certification of health professionals. The purpose of NBCHPN is to promote delivery of comprehensive palliative care through certification. Certification promotes a national standard of requisite knowledge which directly benefits those who receive hospice and palliative care. By establishing and measuring the level of knowledge required for certification and encouraging staff to achieve this status, AHCH ensures its customers that the staff caring for them is highly qualified to provide the best care. Hospice providers across the county recognize the value of certification as it relates to quality. AHCH has always supported staff in pursuing this achievement.
Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice would like to recognize Karen Flynn, BSN, RN/CHPCA, Hospice Director; Susan Stevens, RN/CHPN, Hospice Clinical Supervisor; and RN Clinicians Beth Summers, RN/CHPN and Margaret Quinn, RN/CHPN, who achieved certification from the National Board for certification in Hospice & Palliative nursing.
