The Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice's Hospice House is a fourteen bed facility designed and staffed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for end-of-life care. The Hospice House offers advanced pain and symptom management and is state licensed, Medicare certified and meets all MaineCare requirements.
This overview was developed to help you:
- Determine when a patient may be appropriate for end-of-life care at the Hospice House (admission criteria, levels of care and health insurance coverage)
- Know how to make a referral to the Hospice House, and
- Understand what patients and families can expect at the Hospice House.
Admission Criteria
All patients admitted to the Hospice House must:
- Qualify for hospice care and sign the Election and Informed Consent for Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice hospice services and
- Sign the Hospice House Resident Agreement Form
Appropriate end-stage diagnoses include, but are not limited to:
- Pulmonary (e.g.: end-stage COPD)
- Cardiovascular (e.g.: CHF, cardiomyopathy)
- Neurological (e.g.: ALS, MS, stroke, end-stage dementia)
- Renal failure
- Malignancy
- Genetic disorder (e.g.: Cystic Fibrosis)
Patients of all ages will be accepted with special provisions for pediatric patients available.
Patients who have certain conditions will not be considered for Hospice House admission because the services required are beyond those for which the Hospice House is licensed or has the functional ability to provide.
Such conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Behavior that is potentially threatening, criminal, and/or harmful and could lead to the endangerment of self or others.
- Communicable diseases that require patient isolation.
- Severe acute psychiatric conditions and conditions that require one-on-one supervision will be evaluated on a case by case basis
Levels of Care
Patients will be admitted under two different Levels of Care:
Inpatient Level of Care:
When the patient's physical condition or progress of their disease must be closely monitored in order that pain, physical symptoms or psychological crisis can be managed. It is intendend for short-term use and the duration is determined by the time needed to manage the patient's pain and symptom.
Respite Level of Care:
Will be provided on an as needed basis (up to 5 days at a time under the Medicare/MaineCare regulations) in an approved facility.
Health Insurance Coverage
In-patient and Respite level stays will be covered by Medicare, MaineCare and private insurances and in some cases the Veterans Administration.
Room and board is only covered by Medicare, MaineCare or private insurance as part of patient health care coverage for In-patient level of care or Respite level of care.
Patients who do not qualify for these levels of care will be assessed a room and board charge of $400 per day. Options for deferred estate settlement are available.
Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice subsidized care is available for income-qualified patients who lack health insurance.
