Grieving Children & Teens

The Program for Grieving Children & Teens provides support for children and teens (and their caregivers) who have experienced the death of a close family member or a friend. As a program volunteer, you may work as part of a team facilitating the 10-week support group session or help with special projects. Support group sessions are offered throughout the year in Lewiston/Auburn, Rumford/Mexico, and Farmington.

Training

The Program for Grieving Children & Teens is a comprehensive training designed to prepare new volunteers for their role in facilitating groups for children, teens and adults. The overall training is 27-hours.

The Program for Grieving Children & Teens training is provided by Bereavement staff and some of the topics include:

  • Overview of Grief
  • A Young Child's Understanding of Death
  • Elements of Healing
  • The Skill of Group Facilitation
  • Essential Skills
  • Communication Techniques
  • Supporting Teens in Death
  • Guidelines for Play
  • Intake Information
  • Boundaries of the Volunteer Role
  • Helping Children Through Activities
